What is High Cholesterol and How to prevent it?
Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is carried in the bloodstream and in all the cells of a body. These fatty substances are helpful in forming some cell membranes, hormones etc., But these fatty substance cannot be dissolved in blood, so they should be carried away by some means, and the proteins that helps to carry out these substances are called lipoproteins. When the cholesterol level increases in the blood then it tends to some heart problems. There are many types of lipoproteins to be considered, but the two main kinds are Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and High-density lipoprotein (HDL).
Low-density lipoprotein carries the cholesterol in the blood, so if the LDL is high in number, then it can slowly forms a residue in the arteries and that leads to the clogging of arteries and heart strokes. High-density lipoprotein carries the cholesterol away from the arteries and into the liver and from there it is passed out. It is important to maintain a high number of HDL that removes the residues from the blood and carries away. That is why HDL is considered as good cholesterol. So one should try to increase their HDL number and should decrease their LDL number in order to have a healthy heart. Cholesterol is measured in mg/dl, so below 200 mg/dl is considered a good number and if it increases, then one should immediately consult the doctor for the correct treatment.
